What To Do When Your Car Won't Start - A Guide From Our Los Angeles Auto Shop
When your car won't start, it usually happens at the worst possible time. Check out the most common reasons your car won't start below and what you can do about it. If you have a more serious problem with getting your car to start, contact Complete Automotive Systems in Los Angeles for superior auto repair.
Dead Battery
The first place to look when your car won't start is the battery. The car's electrical power, such as the lights and radio, is supplied by the battery. A battery can lose its function due to loose wiring, leaving a light on overnight, or having an old battery. To get your car started, try jump-starting it. If that works, have your battery checked as soon as possible to see if it needs to be replaced.
Ignition Problems
Maybe the problem starts the moment you try to turn the key. The ignition could be locked if you can't physically turn the key. This is common while parking on a hill or when your wheels are in contact with a curb. To release the ignition lock, try rotating the steering wheel back and forth.
You may have a faulty ignition switch if you can physically turn the key but the car will not start. Check whether you can turn on your headlights or dashboard lights to be sure it's not a dead battery.
Empty Gas Tank
If you're near a gas station, an empty gas tank is one of the easiest problems to solve. You can tell your car is out of gas if your gauge is below empty. But allowing your gas tank to get this low is not recommended. If the gas tank becomes too low on a regular basis, it will clog the pump's fuel filter, leaving you stranded and perhaps causing significant engine problems later.
