Common Suspension Issues in Bentleys

Bentley cars really are the majestic kings of the automobile world. Excluding classic luxury and maturity in their design, Bentley has appealed to the elite driving community for decades, offering a symbol of both status and impeccable taste.

However, even the very top of the motoring world can still fall victim to issues and part failures without the correct care and attention. In this article, we will take a closer look at some of the most common suspension issues neglectful Bentley owners may face.

Air Suspension

While Bentleys have utilized multiple different suspension systems over the years, most of the modern Bentleys now use an iteration of the electronic air suspension system, popularized in the 1990’s.

As the name might suggest, air suspension is a type of vehicle suspension which uses pressurised air powered by an air pump or a compressor to absorb shock and vibrations as the car drives. The air is pumped into bellows which are typically made from textile-reinforced rubber. Depending on the amount of air provided, these bellows raise or lower the chassis from the axle. This is done in response to changing road surfaces and terrain, creating a superior and smoother driving experience.

Common Issues

As the air suspension represents a complex series of systems all working together, there can be many issues which can occur down the line, some of which are sadly synonymous with Bentleys.

Moisture

The compressed air used within the air suspension system naturally contains a small amount of moisture. However, if the air dryer assembly isn’t working correctly and this is allowed to accumulate, it can cause problems, which can cause quite severe damage. Built up moisture around metal parts can lead to rust and corrosion, which not only can lead the entire system to cease up, but also could damage it beyond repair.

Suspension Air Bag Failure

This is one of the systems which can be affected by moisture build up. The moisture damages the air bag from the inside, leaving it prone to punctures. Punctures are caused by debris from the road, and while the air suspension system is designed to be resistant to a variety of terrains, if it has been weakened by damage or poor maintenance, it becomes far more susceptible.

Dryness

A certain amount of lubrication is required within the suspension system to help keep parts flexible and moving as they should. If the system becomes too dry, then it can cause the rubber components to become stiff and brittle, leading to failure.

Leaks in the Air Lines

The air line is the tubing which connects the air bags to the rest of the system. Over time, without proper care and attention the air line, the system can become worn out, and leak air through holes which have formed. There is also the potential for this problem to occur from an errant piece of road debris, but this is much less likely. The holes in the system make maintaining pressure difficult, leaving you with a suspension that feels less tight or prone to sagging. It can also cause the compressor or air pump to work over time, leading to failure of these parts.

Compressor Failure

As previously mentioned the compressor is what keeps the pressurized air flowing throughout the suspension system. If this becomes worn out your suspension will not inflate at all, making your vehicle more or less impossible to drive. The most common causes for failure of this essential part is poor maintenance, such as air leaks, which will cause the suppressor to work harder and harder to try to achieve correct suspension pressure, leading it to burn itself out in the process.
